2013 Sony World Photography Awards

A cup of tea, some smiling children and a spider’s view of the world are among the winners of this year’s Sony World Photography Awards.

The winners of the Open, Youth and 3D strands of the competition have been announced, with the Open category attracting nearly 55 000 entries from all over the world.

Winning images include Matías Gálvez’s image of a sugar lump being dropped in a cup of tea (in the ‘Split Second’ category):

And this charming image from Ming Hui Guan, which won the appropriately named ‘Smile’ category:

The Open category winners will now compete for a $5000 overall prize, and all images will be displayed at the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at London’s Somerset House.

The winners of the Youth and 3D competitions have also been announced, with Alecsandra Dragoi among the Youth winners with this image of ‘New Year’s Eve traditions in Romania’:

The 2013 World Photography Awards Exhibition is at Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R, from 26 April-12 May.
