Conran, 82, is stepping down as chairman of Conran Holdings, which operates the Conran + Partners design consultancy and the Conran Shop.

He is being replaced by his son Jasper, 54. Jasper Conran became a non-executive director of Conran Holdings in 2009, and replaced Terence as chairman of the Conran Shop in 2012.

A Conran Holdings statement says, ‘Jasper’s involvement is driven by a desire to secure the future for this family owned group. Jasper will have full executive control over the entire business.

‘Jasper has made a significant contribution to Conran Shop Holdings by revitalising the brand, setting a new dynamic direction for its future and ensuring the Conran Shop is the pioneer in “design concept” stores globally. The strong upturn in recent turnover and footfall is testimony to his vision and capabilities.’

Terence will remain on the board of Conran Holdings as a non-executive director and will continue to be involved in the Prescott and Conran portfolio, which includes Boundary Restaurant and Rooms, Lutyens and Albion.

He will also focus on his role at the soon to be expanded Design Museum and his writing.
