The Science Museum celebrates plastics

From plastic buckets to Bakelite coffins, the Science Museum maps the history of plastics in Plasticity – 100 Years of Making Plastics, which opens today.

Celebrating the centenary of Leo Baekeland’s invention of Bakelite, the world’s first entirely synthetic material, in 1907, the exhibition also looks forward to the future of modern environmentally conscious design. It runs until January 2009 and is part of the museum’s Wasted Opportunity? project, funded by SITA Trust and Defra.
