Young Design Centre opens

The Sorrell Foundation Young Design Centre opens at Somerset House in London today.

The centre is designed to highlight the wants and needs of young people from the designers of their schools.

It will also encourage local authorities to engage with the foundation’s body of work established over the past seven years, including its Joinedupdesignforschools programme.

Backed by the Department for Education and Skills, the centre will host exhibitions, run workshops and establish a research centre and archive on site.

The exhibition programme kicks off today with the Casson Mann-designed show What’s Next for Schools.

The Sorrell Foundation has also announced its sponsorship of The RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award, described as the UK’s first prize for excellence in school architecture. The prize aims to raise the standards of design in new school building with the award of £5000 to the architect of the best primary or secondary school.

    Hi
I teach in a new build sixth form college for post 16 students with special educational needs. Since we arrived at the college we have noticed several aspects of the design which could be better (e.g. wider doorways for wheelchair users) although this building is a huge improvement on facilities we used prior to opening here. I am sure some of our students would love the opportunity to visit the design centre and offer some viewpoints on aspects of design for future colleges and schools. Please contact me if this is possible as I feel our students (and staff) could make a positive contribution to the building of new schools to ensure they are accessible to all.

Why not contact The Sorrell Foundation directly. You can find their details on http://www.thesorrellfoundation.com – they would be pleased to talk to you I’m sure. Thanks for the comment.
