Landor boss takes top design role at Procter & Gamble

FMCG giant Procter & Gamble has named Phil Duncan, Landor Associates president of Europe and the Middle East, as its next vice-president of design.

FMCG giant Procter & Gamble has named Phil Duncan, Landor Associates president of Europe and the Middle East, as its next vice-president of design.

The Cincinatti-born Duncan, himself a former P&G acolyte, is to replace Claudia Kotchka, the outgoing vice-president of design, innovation and strategy, and will report directly to P&G chairman and chief executive AG Lafley in the US.

Duncan’s appointment, one of the top jobs in design, will be seen to cement WPP’s existing links with P&G.

Duncan originally joined WPP-owned Landor to run and build its global P&G relationship. He was given the job of running the EMEA region for Landor in Paris two years ago, and oversaw the consultancy’s most lucrative year in Europe to date in 2007.

Duncan leaves Landor on 27 June to take up his new post on 1 August, while Kotchka, who was made P&G vice-president for design in 2001, is to retire after 30 years of service.

Landor managing director for London, Cheryl Giovannoni, will step up to become the group’s president for Europe, where she will oversee Landor’s eight European offices in addition to continuing in her current role.

Giovannoni joined Landor in 2005 as managing director of the London office. She oversaw its recent repositioning of supermarket chain Morrisons.

Her rise will underscore London as Landor’s main hub in Europe, with Giovannoni based in the UK, alongside the group’s European finance and HR operations.

‘P&G is certainly our biggest global client here at Landor and Phil has played a huge role in developing that relationship, and in the growth of the business overall,’ says Giovannoni. ‘It’s been good from both a Landor perspective, and from the WPP point of view, since Phil has a very good relationship with Team WPP.’

Landor chief executive Charlie Wrench adds, ‘I’ve asked Cheryl to take on the role of president for the region because of her stellar track record in London and her great strengths in leading and building key client relationships. I am looking to her to develop the rest of the region to the same effect, and I have every confidence she will execute flawlessly against that,’
