Rufus Leonard has been appointed as lead digital consultancy for British Gas, following an eight-way competitive pitch.

As part of the three-month-long pitch, Rufus Leonard made a 60-second film about the company to be screened on YouTube.

Neil Svenson, chief executive at Rufus Leonard, says, ‘There was a hidden message within the brief, asking agencies to prepare a video.’

The consultancy will initially redesign British Gas’s website and develop a strategy for online sales, online self-service and customer engagement.

Svenson, who is looking to develop a long-term relationship with British Gas, says that in terms of digital development, ‘the utility market place is a bit behind the curve’, adding that it is a ‘sensible decision’ for British Gas to review its digital strategy.

Rufus Leonard’s appointment follows the announcement in March that Landor will be reviewing how British Gas can connect with customers in a more emotional way.
