A pirates life for me

If, like most sensible people, you like a side order of typography with your gin and tonic, then a new collaboration between art collective Pirates, the Central Illustration Agency and London’s quirky bar outfit Mothership Group will be the perfect post-work drinking hole.

The team have got together to create Pop Up Pirates, a hybrid of pop-up bar and art installation in London’s Clerkenwell. The late-night bar has been transformed by Pirates using spray paint, set design, film and photography.

The venue, at 27 Clerkenwell Road, was once a factory specialising in silver lithography and on this theme Pirates has covered the interiors in colourful lettering, created mock printing presses and installed giant black boards in the toilets ready for punters to create their own typographic designs.

Mothership Group, which is the team behind east London’s The Book Club and the Queen of Hoxton, will be looking after the alcoholic side of the venture, which will run for three months until August.

Pop Up Pirates opens on 20 May at 27 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1.
