CSD delays bid for design certification
The Chartered Society of Designers is postponing its application to professionally certify designers, following a meeting with regulating body the Privy Council, Design Week understands.
A source close to the CSD says the Privy Council has called the CSD to a meeting ’recently’, following concerns about the scheme that ’several organisations and individuals’ had raised with the Privy Council. During the meeting, Design Week understands that the Privy Council advised the society to conduct a widespread consultation within its own membership and the design community at large.
’The CSD has been misleading its membership for many years, telling them they were chartered designers, and has consistently failed to consult with the membership on issues,’ says a member of the CSD. CSD chief executive Frank Peters was unavailable for comment.

In 2000 Frank Peters wrote –
“For a short time, the Society was awarding Chartered Designer status to members qualified and practicing in Design Education and Design Management. Last year Council recognised that this status should only be awarded to professional designers who had qualified and practiced in design in accordance with the above”
“Our position as the only body in the world to bestow Chartered status is a privilege and as usual, with that privilege there is a responsibility.”
In 1999 Lin Gibbon when CSD president wrote
“….it is a privilege to represent 6,000 members who belong to the only body of chartered designers in the world….”
“…. members of the public will become aware that there is such a thing as a Chartered Designer and wish to know more.”
and more recently the CSD Membership Application form stated
Full membership of the CSD carries with it the status of a Chartered Designer… ”
“In addition to recognition as a Chartered Designer, members receive an extensive range of services and benefits…”
