East End booty
An old brewery, a tussle and then a car boot. No, this isn’t the gruesome end of a gangster flick nemesis but an east London art event taking place next weekend.
The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair, at London’s Truman Brewery off Brick Lane on 6 June, features some of the art world’s top car booters – Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk and Billy Childish – flogging you their wares from the back of their cars.
This year’s theme of ‘wrestling, wrangling, grappling and gaming’ will see a live wrestling ring, fight night-themed installations, a limited-edition wrestling print by Peter Blake and a T-shirt designed by his graphic designer daughter Rose.
There will be car-based sculptures from artists Pete Fowler, Jessica Albarn, Ian Dawson and Oliver Guy-Watkins and 60 other artists, such as Bob and Roberta Smith and Martin Creed, will be selling Lucha Libre-inspired work as well as their usual fare.
If you’re enjoying the car art installations, then a number of the artists have also produced limited-edition tax-disc holders that will available to adorn your own car. Let’s just hope it’s smackdown rather than tipping it down.
