New constellations

Ever thought about how stars look different depending on when you are in the world? With this theme in mind the concept of stargazing takes on a different stance this month as Bunch – a disparate group of creatives from advertising and design – hold the exhibition Bunch of Stars to celebrate commissioned work promoting the pub The Star of Bethnal Green.

Bunch created an identity for the pub in 2008, in which a traditional ‘long-tailed star’ was taken and illustrated to create artwork that represented each month of the year. A constellation of illustrators from around the world were then sought to develop their own versions of a long-tailed star. The results ‘depict a dramatic array of cultural influences’, says Bunch.

The exhibition at London’s Red Gallery will display 16 stars, and includes contributions from as far afield as Argentina, Croatia, Guatemala, Iceland and Uganda. The stars come in an array of designs from bikini-clad sunbathers by swimming pools to ink-wielding octopuses. Well, you wouldn’t see that as an astronomer, would you?
