A matter of gravity

‘And then I looked up at the sun and saw the sky, and the way that gravity pulls on you and I, on you and I’, crooned Danny McNamara, on Gravity, the 2004 number seven hit for post-Britpop dullards Embrace.

As McNamara was obviously well aware, gravity is an inescapable force to be reckoned with. But how much do we really know about it?

To help enlighten us on the subject, the brainy folk behind the Kosmica sessions are bringing us an evening of enlightenment in a couple weeks with their evening A Matter of Gravity.

Gravitational Theatre

The session will be chaired by interactions designer Nelly Ben Hayoun, who is co-curating the event with Nahum Mantra from Shunt Gallery as part of The Arts Catalyst.

The really rather cosmic indeed programme of talks includes architect and rollercoaster designer Julijonas Urbonas’ discussion of The ’Gravitational Theatre’, in which he will examine the aesthetic manifestations of gravity in 21st century culture.

Artist Alicia Framis will present a talk on the Moon Life Foundation, a project which speculates on the possibility that humans will, one day, inhabit space. Framis’ dedication to the topic saw her take part in a performance art piece in which she lived in an astronaut suit for two weeks in her ‘Base Camp’, among drawings and prototypes that aim to both parody and demand women’s presence on the moon.

Jill Stuart’s talk, Who Owns Outer Space?, will explain the history of cosmic governance and the future of outer space law.

Cosmic jive indeed.

Kosmica 4 willl take place on 7 June from 7-10pm at  The Arts Catalyst,
50-54 Clerkenwell Road,
London EC1M . The event is free but booking is recommended though http://www.cosmolog.org.uk
