Saatchi Gallery hosts Collect 2011 craft show

The Crafts Council’s Collect 2011 contemporary craft show opens tomorrow at the Saatchi Gallery with a £75 000 curatorial competition and a new project space.

Installations and commissioned pieces will be on display in the new space based around three themes – function, installation and colour.

Works here include a ‘living wall installation’ of glass and ceramic flowers by Rosa Nguyen which will evolve during the course of the fair, pen and ink work by ceramicist Katherine Morling and a collaborative installation by Ptolemy Mann (textiles) and Lubna Chowdhary (ceramics). The pair will explore textures and material across the same colour palette.

An Art Fund Collect scheme supported by the Crafts Council and The Art Fund will present curators with the chance to pick one object for their museum or gallery.

Shortlisted curators will today be given one hour to pick an object and justify their selection to a judging panel before the winner is awarded a £75 000 grant to cover the purchase.

Work will be shown by 37 international craft galleries showcasing 400 designers whose pieces will be on display across materials including ceramics, glass, textile, wood, furniture, silver and fine metal.
