Bompas and Parr designs crazy golf course for Selfridges roof

For crazy-golf to live up to the lofty promise of its name, it would probably have to be played on a vertiginous plateau where the course is made out of cake.

With this very idea in mind, Selfridges has turned to food architects Bompas and Parr to create a nine-hole course which comes with the caveat, ‘don’t lick the obstacles.’

The idea has been inspired by the Selfridges roof displays of the 1920s and 30s, which included a mini-golf course. Other endeavours saw terraced gardens and an all-girl-gun club take to the roof, so maybe look out for a green-fingered rifle range next year. Gardening with guns.

This year’s Big Roof Top Tea and Golf Party covers 771 m2 and somehow comprises 200 trees.

Each hole is made out of cake and represents a London landmark. Golfers must navigate the likes of Buckingham Palace, St Pauls Cathedral, and Tower Bridge – all finished in fondant and piped icing.

But beware of cake-stand bunkers and ‘sugary waterfalls.’ We’re not joking.

A successful putt reveals a hidden ‘visual treat,’ and for olfactory gratification, a micro-technology system will waft the smell of Bakewell tart.

The Big Rooftop Tea and Golf Party runs from 31 May – 2 September at Selfridges 400 Oxford Street W1C
