Creative Swap project helps companies exchange staff

Ever wondered what working life is like for other designers, but don’t want to leave your job?

Sane&Able founder Alan Long has had the same thought. Through his initiative Creative Swap, he is ‘offering creative companies from across the UK, the chance to exchange talented individuals,’ he says.

Not forever mind, just for a working week from 24-28 September, and he is looking for individuals from design, architecture, illustration, game design, advertising, or any other creative profession.

The hope is that Creative Swap will push people from familiar surroundings into a fresh creative environment where new relationships, new thinking and new ideas might be forged.

‘People work for the same companies for years and they get used to solving problems a certain way as well as applying the same processes, therefore idea development can become limited and somewhat stale,’ says Long.

Business owners’ primary concerns will be IP ownership, disclosure, and even employee poaching, but Creative Swap insists that participants sign a document of terms and conditions to prevent this.

Companies consisting of more than two employees can submit as many staff members as they like.

Matches are made at random by Creative Swap, although proximity is taken into account, so nobody is uprooted and sent to the other end of the country.

Creative Swap takes place from 24-28 September. The deadline for registration is 31 August. For more information go to: http://www.creativeswap.co/

What a wonderful scheme – I hope that the uptake is great – the potential value is enormous!

Hi Karen, the scheme is going really well at the moment.

We’d love any feedback on the idea. Some people have mentioned that not knowing the person you will swap with could be an issue i.e skill set/discipline.

We wanted to keep it as fair as possible, but what are peoples thoughts?

That’s a brilliant idea. I’d love to be involved but (unfortunately) I’m starting a new job on the 24th, so getting a bit of a swap of my own anyway! Fingers crossed this is a success and is repeated.
