El Ultimo Grito wins London Design Medal
London-based design duo El Ultimo Grito has been awarded the 2012 London Design Medal.
The medal is presented each year as part of the London Design Festival to a designer who has made a significant contribution to design and London.
El Ultimo Grito was chosen by a panel of judges that included last year’s winner Ron Arad, as well as V&A director Martin Roth and Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota.
El Ultimo Grito’s Rosario Hurtado and Robert Feo were presented with the award, designed by Hannah Martin, at a ceremony last night.
In addition to the London Design Medal, three new awards were also given out.
Sir Terence Conran was recognised for Lifetime Achievement, while Jane ni Dhulchaointigh was given the award for Design Entrepreneur, and Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg was given the award for emerging talent.
Sir John Sorrell, chairman of the London Design Festival, says, ‘We have awarded the London Design Medal to a designer who we consider inspirational in terms of the imagination, quality and impact of their work.
‘And this year, we felt a strong need also to celebrate the achievements of those who are on the threshold of major success in the world of design as well as those who are renowned worldwide.’
‘In addition to the London Design Medal, three new awards were also given out.’
