Erratum

A cheesegrater without any holes, a comb with no teeth, a diary that’s impossible to open – London-based artist Jeremy Hutchison has developed a range of products that all have one vital flaw.

Each product in the Erratum range has been made with one error that renders it useless. Hence design crimes such as the leadless pencil and the bent golf club.

Selecting factories across China, India, Poland, Turkey and Pakistan, Hutchison invited workers to insert – at their own discretion – an error into items they typically produce. Each is therefore a one-off, an aberration from the production line.

Hutchison says the items display ‘dysfunctional luxury’, stating ‘true luxury has no function. It is not something to be used or understood. It is a feeling: beyond sense, beyond logic, beyond utility.

‘It is an ethic of perfect dysfunctionality.’

The Erratum range is the antithesis of William Morris’s mantra ‘have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’

The limited-edition Erratum range will be available from a pop-up at Paradise Row, 74a Newman Street, London W1, from 5 December, and also at www.erratum.co.
