Architect Penson has completed the final part of its overhaul of Google’s head office in Covent Garden, London.

Penson was appointed in May following work Google’s office in London’s Victoria.

The Covent Garden head office space in Central St Giles, Covent Garden, London, covering 50,000m2, is split over several floors and includes ‘Secret Gardens’ and ‘Allotments’.

The space is shared with other companies, and Google occupies levels four, five and nine, and half of levels three and six.

Fittings have been designed with what Penson calls a sense of ‘visual fun,’ including submarine style noise-proof doors with the instructions Do Not Turn to Open.

‘Secret Gardens’ on balconies, accessed from a café, offer seating behind box hedge walls, which act as wind and sun shields.

‘Allotments’ have been created in timber tubs for staff on the ninth floor who are placed on waiting lists to be the custodians of one.

The Town Hall is a venue for 200 guests featuring velvet curtains, exposed ceilings, and a video wall.

A gym and dance studio have been integrated, a ‘bikedry’ for storing cycling gear and a shower block painted in an luminous orange, designed to energise staff, according to Penson.

Everything has been designed within Google’s environmental guidelines known as the Red List, according to Penson.

Penson founder Lee Penson says, ‘It’s all about human beings and that’s it. Think sunken snugs, comfort, fun, comfy slippers, squishy carpets, cushions, daybeds, nice fresh food, gardening, vegetables, health, visual stimulation, relaxation, exercise, fresh air & you’ll get what its all about as an HQ.’

The office is set to fully open in September.
