Ken Garland: Structure and Substance

Unit Editions is set to publish the first comprehensive monograph of the career of Ken Garland, from his student projects in the 1950s right through to his recent self-published works.

Now in his 80s, and still practicing, writing and lecturing (most recently at Typo London), Garland’s career has taken in editorial work for Design magazine and the Architectural Review, designs for Galt Toys, and the seminal First Things First manifesto from 1964.

First Things First aimed to radicalise design and called for design to be used in ‘more useful and more lasting forms of communication’ rather than overused in advertising.
