Royal Academy in £5.7 million interiors overhaul
The Royal Academy of Arts is overhauling its Keeper’s House space, which is used by RA Friends and the general public, in a £5.7 million project being led by architect Long & Kentish with interior design by David Chipperfield.
Keeper’s House is in the east wing of the RA’s Burlington House building and will be made directly accessible from the courtyard.
The project will see an unused floor in the Keeper’s House converted to host a new Peyton and Byrne restaurant and a new ‘Garden Bar’.
The two friends spaces – the Sir Hugh Casson Room and the Belle Shenkman Room – will also be modernised, with improved features such as a new lift and improved access to the garden.
The refurbished spaces will also feature newly commissioned artworks from Grayson Perry and other Royal Academicians.
Charles Saumarez Smith, secretary and chief executive of the RA, says, ‘The beautiful plans… are mindful of the past and the future and are in keeping with previous, well-loved improvements to the Royal Academy.’
The new spaces are set to open next spring.
Looking forward to seeing the results
