Teaching children through play

New company Science Play, which developed from the Designs of the Time Cornwall programme, is launching a range of products to teach children through play.

Planetarium

Science Play has been co-founded by children’s play designer Amy Charman, who was part of the Dott Cornwall team who developed the Serious Play project.

The aim of Serious Play was to develop products, co-designed with children, which would teach them through play.

Charman says Science Play has taken this theme and aims to develop projects that will ‘bring the science curriculum to the playground’.

Planetarium

The first project to be designed and developed by Science Play is the Play Planetarium, a play area that features a map of the stars and aims to teach children about the universe.

Charman says the projects are being developed for clients such as schools and science parks, and that further projects are in development.

Awesome!!! Wish I had this kind of learning when I was a kid.

This is great for reaching the children who have parents who are not able or not willing to take them to a science centre. The real problem is that hands on fun learning suddenly stops when the children enter year 7. Is anyone out there courageous enough to tackle this difficult age group?

Fantastic! I want to play on that.

Great design but wouldn’t conform to BSEN1176. The idea of children laying on the centre structure as a hammock and looking up is great but it would end up being used as tough rubber in a centre rope was designed for…a trampoline

    Hi Bradley,
The centre is made of reinforced rubber membrane and is a hammock not a trampoline, our designs are designed to pass en1176 and have also been independently checked by a playground inspector.
