The Picture Show

Last week we brought you news of an illustration show that promises the Best of British; and this week another wave of young UK illustration talent is showing off their work at London’s Conigsby Gallery.

The exhibition, entitled The Picture Show, will present work from 10 emerging illustrators, working in a range of media including painting, textiles and digital art.

Here at DW we’re suckers for avian imagery (see graphic novels, taxidermy, and Edywn Collins’ gorgeous wallpaper), so we were naturally taken with Emma Cowley’s pretty finches. Cowley is inspired by British wildlife and ‘childhood memories of walks in the countryside.’

Kyle Maclennan

Kyle Maclennan, meanwhile, looks to pop culture icons for his work. Inspired by ‘films, books, internet, the bottom of a bottle, music venues’ and wandering round ‘random places observing my surroundings, taking little things in here and there’, his work owes no small debt to Pop Art and Warhol’s celebrations of celebrity.

The playful typographic approach used by Vinesh Shah is cute and colourful; while Kellie Black’s rather apt image of a smiley girl holding an umbrella against an ominous sky creates something positive from the relentless gloom of the soggy past few months.

The Picture show runs until 21 July at the Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street  Marylebone, London W1T. For more information see www.thepicshow.co.uk
