Typographic Jubilee Challenge

Back in January, we saw the launch of the Random Postcard Project, which calls for people to design postcards inspired by a random word relating to 2012, London or the Olympics.

Organised by the former London College of Communications Experimental Type students who make up Random collective, participants can e-mail a number between one and 100 and receive a word in return, which they then fashion into an A6 postcard to be displayed online and in an east London exhibition in August.

Now, nearly six months in, organisers are shaking things up a bit. Keen to receive more typography-based postcards, they have launched a Jubilee Typography Challenge, where simply by clicking a link users can receive their random word, create their postcard and scan it in, all in the name of her majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Many beautiful type-based submissions having already arrived – ranging from eight-year-old Stefan Nawathe’s brilliant Words entry to artist Andy Altmann of Why Not Associates (the people behind the Comedy Carpet), who has created a beautiful take on Music with his ‘always a Northern Soul’ card.

Submissions for the Typographic Jubilee Challenge will be uploaded to the website throughout the Jubilee weekend so that the postcards can mirror the ongoing celebrations.

The project is run by Sarah Hyndman, who is also creative director of consultancy With Relish. She says, ’I’d really like to get more typographic cards in to show a wide range of styles and participants. It would be great to get a few more designers on board and a good way to do that is with a typographical angle.’

More than 250 postcards have already been received, and 13,000 random words requested, for the overall project, and it’s hoped that the Jubilee Weekend will prove to be a catalyst for a surge in Jubilee-themed typographical entries.

‘It’s a good way to get involved in the celebrations that circumnavigates the politics’, says Hyndman.

The exhibition will take place at Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 from 2 – 19 August
