Five identity designs have been shortlisted and the winning mark will be chosen following an online public vote (for more details and to vote, click here).

The initiative has been launched by UAE vice president and prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who said on Twitter, ‘The UAE nation brand logo will promote the UAE and tell its story to the world.’

The five anonymous designs were proposed during the last UAE cabinet session and, according to the local press, a winner will be chosen after voting ends on 18 July.

Each logo features variations in English and Arabic, and the voting site also features brand applications showing the identities in use.

Earlier this year, the tiny European country of Liechtenstein chose a new logo following a public poll open to the country’s population. The winning identity, by UK-based designer Marc Weymann, replaces a previous identity developed by Wolff Olins.

This smacks of the X factor: a group of reasonably uninspiring contenders with dull stories judged by public votes. Let’s hope the public give a vote of no confidence. Shocking stuff.

It’s actually the fact there are wildly varying messages behind each of the five routes that’s more of an issue than their slightly underwhelming graphic styles:
