The World Press photo exhibition is set to open in London. What do you think is the most striking news image from the past 12 months?

Steve Price

‘Here is the modern day quandary – We are consumed by a constant sprawl of information and images both seen/recorded and made/taken by myself. News feeds, tweets, instagrams, shares, likes, RT’s, and so on. It’s mind-bogglingly difficult to think of one image. But images do speak a thousand words, they evoke an incredible range of emotions. If I were to choose one from memory (and definitely not the Google search I didn’t do to remind myself), it would be Mo Farah crossing the line and realising he’d won Gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000m races. His elation, shock, awe and overall happiness was shared with billions.’

‘It’s unusual for creative activities to get such a high profile in the mainstream press, so for me it would have to be this image taken at the London 2012 opening ceremony. Having been lucky enough to be at one of the rehearsals, I feel this picture captures the excitement and atmosphere of the momentous occasion. It represents a monumental effort on the part of many – professionals and amateurs – and is a testament to the power of a strong idea and narrative delivered by a united, passionate team, led by a courageous and utterly creative director.’

‘For me the most striking image of the past 12 months doesn’t simply show a snapshot of history but suggests a potentially interesting future. The first photo taken from the surface of Mars. See it here.’
