Crafts Council launches gift design competition

The Crafts Council has launched a competition to design an official UK gift which will be presented at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 on behalf of the British Council and the Foreign Office.

The expo, which aims to present ‘sustainable and harmonious urban living’, will hold a UK National Day on 8 September 2010, when the gift will be presented.

A second competition has been launched in tandem, to produce an object that can be reproduced as 80 limited-edition pieces to be given as VIP gifts of the UK Pavilion at the event.

The Shanghai World Expo is themed on ‘city and metropolitan evolution in the 21st century’ and the designs must address a ‘better city, better life’ brief and be composed of ceramic, acrylic, textile, glass or metal.

The closing date for both competitions – which hold no monetary prize – is 8 January and the winners will be drawn in the week commencing 14 January. More information on how to apply can be found on http://www.craftscouncil.org.uk.
