US tops country brand survey

The United States has claimed the top spot in FutureBrand’s 2009 Country Brand Index, with last year’s number one, Australia, slipping to third place.

Canada held on to the number two spot, with New Zealand fourth and France fifth. The United Kingdon was ranked eighth.

The Country Brand Index, compiled in conjunction with PR firm Weber Shandwick, uses quantitative research and expert opinions. It ranks countries on assets such as suitability for business, arts and culture, and beaches.

René A Mack, president of Weber Shandwick’s travel and lifestyle global practice, says, ‘It is interesting to note that the US has risen to be number one country brand this year. It’s logical to assume that the shift in the political climate and renewed optimism surrounding the election of President Obama was a key influence in the US topping the list.’
