Alter-ego

The art world is full of alter-egos. Turner Prize-winning ceramicist Grayson Perry sometimes appears as Claire and numerous street artists, such as Blek le Rat and Banksy, permanently hide behind pseudonyms and shadowy personas.

As part of an exhibition in central London this month, French graphic artist Dran will be allowing visitors into the world of his alter-ego Scriboulle, a homeless puppet whose only desire in life – or Pinocchio-type existence – is to create art.

Dran says, ‘My aim is to champion the idea of drawing by hand, using the imagination to make things magical.’

The installation, which will be located in a secret venue in W1 from 26 November-23 December, will feature works by Dran and Scriboulle and will be accompanied by an exhibition of Dran’s work, called I Have Chalks, at Pictures on Walls gallery in east London.

Dran himself comes from Toulouse and found a love for the visual through comic books from Hergé and the Gallic tradition. His work often references these comic traditions, including covers for editions of Tintin where the red-headed hero has gone off the rails.

What great stuff. I love it, pity I’ll never see it in the flesh.
