Intellectual property laws to be reviewed

An independent review is being launched into how the UK’s intellectual property system can better drive growth and innovation.

The review was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron and will be led by Professor Ian Hargreaves, chair of digital economy at the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies and Cardiff Business School.

The review will report in April 2011 and is expected to look at: barriers to Internet-based business models, the cost and complexity of enforcing IP rights in the UK, the interaction between IP and competition frameworks, and the cost and complexity to SMEs of protecting and exploiting their IP.

Cameron says the aim of the potential overhaul of the IP laws is to ‘make them fit for the Internet age’.
