Type time
With over a decade of type and graphic design under their belts, Henrik Kubel and Scott Williams from London-based studio A2/SW/HK have created a lot of typefaces for commercial clients. And it’s this wealth of handiwork that designers can buy and use, now that the duo have set up new type foundry A2 Type.
With the launch, A2 type has released 15 fonts, each with interesting histories of what inspired the type and where it was first used. Most have had makeovers since they were first used, including increased weight ranges, but have kept the feel of their original usage.
A2 CPH Tram is inspired by the typeface commonly used on the exterior of Danish trams in the 1920s and was based on three original hand-painted signs purchased by the studio.
A2 CWM was created in 2008 as the cover and headline type for Cold War Modern, a book about design between 1945 and 1970 published by the Victoria & Albert Museum. Whereas A2 Danmark first appeared on a set of celebratory stamps depicting the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and pays homage to the museum’s architecture.
And if you’d rather wear your fonts, the studio have also created a snuggly ‘I love typography’ scarf to keep you warm over the winter.
