Government’s spending review out today

The Government will later today announce details of its Comprehensive Spending Review, which will affect funding for all of its departments with design interests from 2008 to 2011.

Both the Design Council and the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts come under the auspices of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, which will see its budgets put in place later today.

The CSR, which will set out Government department spending plans for the three years after 2007, has been informed by an assessment of issues that are expected to shape public services over the next decade. It will be announced at 3.30pm with the Chancellor’s Pre-Budget statement.

The changing demographics of the UK, globalisation, technological change, global uncertainty and climate change have been key to this.

The role of design in shaping public services and helping boost the economy has been referred to in a number of reviews that have informed the CSR, including the Review of the Economics of Climate Change by Sir Nicholas Stern.
