Newcastle-based Sumo Design is creating a brand identity for a new contemporary arts space in the city.

The consultancy has been appointed by Northumbria University to create the brand and website for the Gallery and Studios, which will bring together Gallery North and Graduate Studios Northumbria.

The Gallery and Studios will be housed in Northumbria University’s School of Arts and Social Sciences, which is being refurbished and will open in January 2009.

Sumo Design was appointed two weeks ago after being approached by the university along with two other groups.

The consultancy has already presented the first visuals to the client, which Sumo director of strategy Anya Bramich says are ‘inspired by the 1970s building’.

Bramich adds, ‘We are delighted to be working with Northumbria University. It’s always exciting to be involved in new cultural developments and I hope that we can help to boost the profile of this cutting-edge contemporary space.’

Helen Baker-Alder, director of Gallery North, says, ‘Gallery North and Graduate Studios Northumbria are two exciting initiatives for not just the university and the division of visual arts, but the community as a whole.’
