Custom-designed water stations for London

Water stations created by Hydrachill will be trialled at Hammersmith bus station and London Bridge from 28 October, following discussions between Thames Water, Greater London Authority and Transport for London.

London Mayor Boris Johnson called for tap water to be used more readily than bottled water in his draft water strategy, which was set out in September. He has also pledged to install water fountains across London’s parks.

Johnson had previously called for the introduction of public water fountains across the capital in a speech to mark the opening of the 2008 London Architecture Festival.

Nick Davies, director of water refilling station manufacturer Hydrachill, says his company’s machines have been ‘custom-designed from scratch’ for the London project. He adds that he is currently discussing the project with other water authorities, including Northumbrian Water.

Members of the public will be able to fill bottles of up to 500ml for 20p when the machines are installed.

‘The trial process,’ Davies says, ‘will ensure usage is good and allow us to gauge consumer reaction’ ahead of a potential roll-out.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water says the London machines will carry Thames Water and London on Tap branding.
