Diamonds are forever

If you live your life surrounded by icons of contemporary Scandinavian design, then you might be interested in spending your afterlife in one too.

The Diamant series of coffins and urns – for the discerning corpse – has been created by Danish consultancy Jacob Jensen Design for coffin-maker Tommerup Kister.

The consultancy says the range is inspired by the shape of the diamond, which is ‘perpetual, pure and exalted’.

Each coffin is upholstered with butterfly-patterned organic cotton, which Jacob Jensen says symbolises the soul leaving the body.

The coffins are constructed by hand from Nirdic Birch plywood, and finished with laquer in either black or white.

Timothy Jacob Jensen says, ‘This is an area which demands great reverence and respect, but it seemed to me that the classic and simple form language that has characterised our designs, suited very well indeed.’

He adds, ‘This has been a true design challenge, as our funeral rituals are still surrounded by taboo and mystique.’
