Independent launches new I newspaper

The Independent has launched the I newspaper, which it describes as ‘a newspaper with quality, convenience and desirability’.

The new newspaper has been designed by Jennifer Waddell of  Barcelona-based consultancy Cases & Associates, which also worked on the most recent redesign of The Independent.

The 56-page i launches today at a cost of 20p.

Simon Kelner, editor-in-chief of The Independent and I, says, ‘It’s not only a new paper, but a new kind of paper, designed for people with busy, modern lives.’ Kelner describes the paper as ‘colourful and accessible, concise and intelligent’.

The paper opens with a two-page spread of news in brief articles, called ‘The News Matrix’, which Kelner says ‘gives [the reader] an overview of today’s main news stories’. This matrix model is also used in the business and sport sections.

Other features include a TV guide on the centre pages and an IQ section of features.

The Independent was redesigned in April in a project led by Cases & Associates.

The Independent and The Independent on Sunday were bought by Russian businessman Alexander Lebedev, who also owns the London Evening Standard, in March.
