BBC reviews design services roster

The BBC is reviewing its design marketing and communications roster, which is to be replaced by a new design services roster.

The design marketing and communications roster currently features seven consultancies: Harriman Steel, Red Stone, Premm Design, 999 Design, Studio Output, D8 and Blast Design.

The roster was previously reviewed in June 2010, when five groups – Elmwood, Love Creative, Designate, Inferno and Easy Tiger – were dropped from it.

A maximum number of ten groups is being sought for the new roster, according to the tender notice, although BBC procurement manager Andy Gray says, ‘Going forward we’re not sure how many groups are needed; it could be the same it could be slightly less.’

Rostered consultancies will be engaged in what Gray calls ‘tactical executional design’ including campaign work, posters, and information packs, working alongside those on the creative services roster, which handles many of the BBC’s branding and identity projects.

A pre-qualification questionnaire needs to be submitted and the closing date for expressions of interest is 18 October 2011.

Gray says the roster is reviewed every four years and the contracts on offer are two years long, with the opportunity for a two year extension.

The Design Services roster is split into two separate lots – one the roster itself – and a second lot to work on the BBC’s annual report. Consultancies can apply to one or both.

Reviewing the roster after one year? Seems like a waste of resources on all sides – BBC time and that of all the agencies participating.

Or they just didn’t get what they expected from their agencies!
