Celebrate good times

With temperatures rapidly plummeting and whinges a-plenty, its nice to see autumn being celebrated for the frolicking-in-the-leaves season of fun it truly is.

From next week, East London’s Dreamspace Gallery will display visual responses to the month of September in the Celebration exhibition, in partnership with Mortar & Pestle Studio.

Mortar & Pestle invited 30 illustrators and designers to create an A1 poster, each inspired by a single day within September. Each artist was designated their day, forming a collaborative calendar and providing a much needed reminder to all of us to make the most of each and every day of the month. This is the project’s fourth year, and it is hoped that one day there will be enough to form a calendar for the entire year.

Echoing the idea of stepping back and taking time over things, the participants all use traditional printing methods including letterpress, screen-printing, wood blocking, hand drawing, cyanotypes, embroidery and light sensitive emulsions.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by six talks from industry professionals about getting established in the creative industries.

Sebastian Craig, Dreamspace Gallery curator, says, ‘I saw the exhibition last year and thought it was really smart. We were really keen to work with Mortar & Pestle  – they really know what they’re doing.’

Richard Knowles, Mortar & Pestle co-founder, adds, ‘Generally the nice thing about it is it’s a very open brief- we don’t tie anybody down by saying ‘you have to do this’, so there are very varying responses from different designers and printmakers. The exhibition as a whole shows how people take the same brief and interpret it in very different ways.’
