Halloween’s coming up and if you fancy something scary – but not too scary – then East End Prints’s Happy Halloween! show at Maiden ought to fit the bill.
A host of artists and designers have been given the task of reimagining classic horror characters in an innocent and playful way.
So Sweeney Todd and Silence of the Lambs character Hannibal Lecter get comic-book overhauls from Nicole Thompson, who has also created dating agency-style profiles for the monsters (Hannibal’s favourite food is, predictably, ‘liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti’).
Meanwhile Philip Sheffield has rather subverted Dracula and Frankenstein’s fear factor by printing their images on a series of hand-cut butterflies.
All the works are going on show for a month, opening tonight and in the words of East End Prints ‘this really is going to be a frighteningly good show…’
Happy Halloween! runs at Maiden, London E1, until after Halloween.
