Tunnel Vision

Dining experiences and design keep coming together at the moment, in increasingly ambitious spaces.

For The Minotaur, the Lazarides Gallery has sought out Kofler & Kompanie, the company behind Pret A Diner – one of the forerunners of temporary dining spaces – which has been popping up with Michelin chefs all over Europe since 2004.

Hosted within The Old Vic Tunnels beneath Waterloo station, among the arches, a restaurant and lounge bar has been created, as ‘an alternative cultural space,’ say organisers.

This means sound installation, sculpture, oil on canvas,  and film, inspired by the minotaur of Greek myth – man with bull’s head.

Artist Stanley Donwood has teamed up with musician Thom Yorke to make a walk through labyrinth installation, and Doug Foster has developed a video installation, projected into an archway, where a pool of water reflects the minotaur’s image – to choral music, we’re told.

ATMA has worked up the form of a minotaur from nails, hammered into wood. Viewing from a distance makes the illusion all  the more clear.

Other artists include Anthony Micalef, Jonathan Yeo and Vhils who has chipped an image of Rupert Murdoch into the wall. Lets hope the building isn’t listed.

Other recent design led dining experiences include  this Restaurants in Residence project which saw a Canary Wharf office block turned into a 1980s office inspired restaurant, and just last month this – Secret Sensory Suppers, held in a Masonic Temple devoid of cutlery.

Although the three course meal is £75, the Minotaur, erm, minor tour, which allows you to see the space and the works, is £5.

The event runs until 25 October at The Old Vic Tunnels, Station Approach Road, London SE1
