About Cheim too
In a list of projects covering the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, and Joan Mitchell, designer and gallerist John Cheim’s professional CV reads like a sort of art-world dream dinner party guest list.
California-born Cheim was director of New York’s Robert Miller Gallery from 1978-1996, and is one half of the city’s Cheim & Read gallery, in Chelsea.
However, aside from his venerable art-world connections, Cheim also forged a career as a book designer creating beautiful monographs on subjects including photographers Bruce Weber and Jack Pierson, and painter Alice Neel.
A new exhibition at the ICA’s Reading Room looks to highlight the book design aspect of Cheim’s career, showcasing his elegant use of typography and pared back, stylish aesthetic.
The show has a particular focus on Cheim’s work with Bruce Weber, a photographer perhaps most famous for his 1990 publication Bear Pond, which married nude photography with poetry by Reynolds Price.
Design by John Cheim runs from 15 October – 17 November at the Fox Reading Room, Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London, SW1Y
