Apple is anticipated to launch the latest version of its iPod player today, designed by its US in-house team.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is expected to present the product from Cupertino, San Francisco later today.
The launch comes as sales of iPods show signs of slowing down, as the market comes close to saturation point.
In the last financial quarter, iPod sales lifted just 12 per cent, compared with 21 per cent in the same period the previous year.
Apple faces escalating competition from rivals Nokia and Google – earlier this month, Nokia launched a new music service and mobile handsets to compete with the Apple iPhone.
Meanwhile, Google’s Android phone is rumoured to be launching in the UK on 17 September, over the T-Mobile network.
