Royal Mail seeks pack designers for ‘free gift’ concept

The Royal Mail is seeking designers to create packaging for its latest direct marketing concept, Matter.

The Royal Mail’s head of media propositions Fraser Chisholm tells Design Week that he would like either celebrity or emerging designers to produce boxes for upcoming editions of Matter.

The concept, which Design Week revealed plans for last November, officially launches next month.

Tim Milne – former owner of graphics archive and gallery Artomatic – conceived the idea, in which collections of free gifts are delivered to subscribers from brands including Virgin, Sony, Nissan, Stolichnaya, Penguin and Nintendo.

The pilot box contains eight products designed specifically for Matter by consultancies and direct marketing specialists including Mother, Start Creative, Clinic, Artomatic, TMW, 20:20 London and Iris.

Milne reports that the product ideas came variously from clients, their design consultancies and Artomatic.

The second box – which, like the first, is aimed at young affluent males – will be released to 30 000 UK subscribers in October.
