Design Museum move gets green light
The Design Museum’s plans to move from Shad Thames to a new home in the former Commonwealth Institute on Kensington High Street have won the thumbs up from the council.
The Planning Committee of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has approved the latest plans by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture.
The plans were originally submitted by Chelsfield Partners and the Ilchester Estate in April, and revised in August.
The plans will now have to win approval from English Heritage, which will be considering the matter over the next week.
Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum, says of the council’s decision, ‘We are thrilled with the outcome, which now opens the way for the Design Museum to realise its vision of becoming a world-leading creative centre for design and architecture.’
