Steven Kyffin takes over design at Northumbria University

Northumbria University has appointed Professor Steven Kyffin as dean of its school of design.

Kyffin, an alumni and former visiting professor at the university, is currently senior director of design research and innovation at Royal Philips Electronics.

He taught at the university from 2005-2008, and previously held academic and management positions at the Royal College of Art in London.

Kyffin will take up his new role in January 2010, and expressed his delight at returning to the North East.

‘It is a real honour to be joining Northumbria and a special pleasure to accept a senior role at the university from which I graduated’, he says.

Professor Andrew Wathey, the university’s vice-chancellor, describes Kyffin as a ‘highly respected academic and an outstanding design director in a hugely competitive commercial sphere’.

He adds,‘He will bring great expertise and flair to an already world-leading school.’

Kyffin, who will be based at the design school’s sites in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Islington, north London, is looking forward to getting back to academia.

‘I look forward to working with academic and professional colleagues, and I’m eager to meet our talented and energetic students’, he says.
