Student creates new Olympic logo

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell has revealed the new Olympics education logo, designed by Reiss Evans, winner of a design competition open to 16- to 21-year-olds.

The design will be used exclusively by UK schools and colleges joining the Get Set network – an accolade awarded for showing a commitment to Olympic and Paralympic values. The scheme is affiliated with the London 2012 education programme.

Evans’ design has been selected from entries by more than 150 young designers across the UK.

Evans, an 18-year-old graphic design student at Canterbury College, has just completed a two-month internship with FutureBrand, where his concept was developed. This includes plaques and certificates for schools that become members of the scheme.

The announcement was made at Nightingale Primary School, Woolwich, one of the first schools to become a member of Get Set. Joining Jowell and Evans was Locog board member Jonathan Edwards.

Evans says his pencil design reflects the ‘creativity in UK schools’ and ‘the global nature of the 2012 games’. He adds, ‘The colours tie in with those used in London 2012’s own brand work.’

I don’t think the Olympic logo could be dragged through much more ridicule, opening up a logo ‘redesign’ to schools? Granted – I think the logo couldn’t look much worse and mean much less then it already does. A febal stab at trying to push the brand back into the hands of the people.

  • Andy November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

I couldn’t believe the logo when i first looked at it. I feel embarrassed.

  • Craig November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

  • Carla November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

    Shouldn’t classify it as a logo…

  • LORRAINE SAUNDERS November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

Flogging a dead horse springs to mind.

Feel sorry for the young designers who had to incorporate the logo in their designs…

To be quite honest, i like it and think us “18year old’s” should have a chance, surely people have to start from somewhere? i feel jealousy from these comments and wouldn’t take them as offensive.

  • Amy Ashurst November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

To be honest with the lot of you who are slating the ’18 year olds’ who are lucky enough, and talented enough to get an internship deserve it! I personally think all your so called ‘comments’ are rubbish, the design is brilliant and Reiss deserved to win, well done :). Obviously all ’18 year olds’ have to start somewhere and Reiss has been lucky enough to get a chance to shine…jealous? I think so…WELL DONE REISS.

  • Susan Brown November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

Er i would like to see your designs, NO I DIDNT THINK SO

  • anonymous November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

what is wrong with an 18 year old being on an internship?
i think you should all stop being ignorant idioots and stop bitching about other peoples work.

  • Bill Matfield November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

A little bit jealous are we?
    also gareth simpson
maybe you should get out of the house a bit more instead of judging 18 olds doing a alot better than your crappy life

  • tommy November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

    you cant polish a turd

  • Jamie November 30, -0001 at 12:00 am

Well done to the kid – I can say that as he is only 18. I think it works well and it’s nice to see the flexibility of the logo. A constant shape yet can be used to incorporate different themes. I hope we see more like this.

The cloudy inclusion of Futurbrand should be explained further really.

The design (which used a basic stock image of coloured pencils) was completely re-illustrated by a ‘professional’.
