US architect works on new Glasgow School of Art building

US architect Steven Holl Architects and Scotland-based JM Architects have been appointed to work on a new building opposite Glasgow School of Art’s Grade A-listed Mackintosh Building.

Holl saw off six other shortlisted practices: Benson & Forsyth, Elder and Cannon, Francisco Mangado Architects with ZM Architects, Grafton Architects, Hopkins, and John McAslan and Partners with Nord Architects. An international competition generated submissions from more than 150 international firms.

The new building, which is scheduled to open in 2013, will house studios, workshops, exhibition spaces, lecture and seminar facilities, a new student union and an interpretation centre for the Mackintosh Building.

The Scottish Funding Council has committed up to £50m towards the new building, with other funds coming from land sales, borrowing and philanthropic sources.
