Peacock repackages John Lennon albums for anniversary

Peacock Design has worked with lettering artist and illustrator Ruth Rowland to create a new logo and album covers to mark the 70th anniversary of John Lennon’s birth on 9 October.

Peacock and Rowland have developed a logo based on Lennon’s self-portraits, repackaged eight Lennon studio albums using the original LP artwork and created new packaging designs for the Gimme Some Truth box-set (pictured) and the Power to the People greatest hits release.

The albums will be released by EMI in a project overseen by his widow Yoko Ono.

Peacock was appointed by EMI in April following a pitch, according to creative director Stuart Crouch. He says the consultancy’s ideas were approved by Ono.

The work, which was undertaken by Crouch and senior designer Melanie Hunter, takes much inspiration from Lennon’s own writing and drawings. The Power to the People release features a drawing, inspired by Lennon’s style, of the New York skyline merging into that of Liverpool.

Rowland was tasked by Peacock with developing hand-drawn lettering to match Lennon’s handwriting that could be used across all the albums.

Rowland says, ‘The work involved pulling together as many samples of his handwriting as possible so that I could develop the style – research that kept me smiling as his notes were great examples of his dry wit.’
