Populous creates Olympic beach volleyball venue

Populous has been appointed to create a temporary Olympic beach volleyball venue on London’s Horse Guards Parade for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 15 000-seat venue has been designed by Populous, Allies and Morrison and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, and will host the volleyball competition for 11 days.

Populous was appointed in May 2009 following a tender process that began in November 2008. The consultancy was briefed to create a structure that will integrate with the historic central London site.

The structure features a ‘theatre in the round’ bowl, which has been designed to create a energetic atmosphere, and a three-sided upper bowl that will allow spectators and photographers views of the London skyline.

Populous principal Jeff Keas says, ‘All work to the landscape is temporary and is designed to have minimal impact on the existing site.’
