Design LSM creates interiors for Indian street-food café

Design LSM has designed the interiors for new Indian street-food café Roti Chai, which is set to fully open in Marble Arch, London.

The consultancy has worked to a brief which required ‘authenticity’ over ‘theme’ in order to develop what it calls a ‘culinary journey’.

A ground-floor café has been designed with an open kitchen which the consultancy hopes will be ‘bright and informal’.

Design highlights include wall fittings made from motorcycle headlights, to reference India’s busy streets.

A metalwork wall and staircase has been created by Lucien Hewetson, who has integrated caged pendant lights.

Furniture is a mix of unfinished ply, laminated ply tables, and vintage chairs and benches.

In the basement the consultancy says it has tried to cultivate an atmosphere of intimacy with dark walls and soft lighting, brass screens, mirrors inspired by train windows, luggage racks, suitcases and Pirelli tyres.

Aged brass lampshades will be found over tables and at the bar – where colourful charpoys, (an Indian bed consisting of a rope strung frame) have been used.

Warm reds, oranges and yellows have been back painted on glass behind the bar area and glass windows to the kitchen

Roti Chai will be fully open across both floors by 26 October.
