on the outside looking in

With LDF excitement gathering apace, it’s easy to forget that another similarly acronymed event – London Fashion Week – will be running concurrently.

Neatly straddling the worlds of design and fashion is the Fashion Windows event at London’s May Fair hotel. Fashion graphic artist, Spiros Halaris has created a series of large-scale graphics for the hotel’s windows, bringing the exclusivity of the goings-on within the hotel to the mere mortals on the outside.

Halaris says, ‘The May Fair hotel has been the official sponsor for four years now, and they wanted to do something really creative and fashion related to celebrate it.

‘We looked at the area to see what designers though of the hotel, and we realised more people are on the outside looking in, than on the inside, so we covered the windows with illustrations.’

The six beautiful images will each measure about two metres long. ‘It makes such a big impact,’ says Halaris, ‘It’s like watching a hotel become covered in art.’

Though some of the pieces are existing works that have been enlarged for the windows, there are also a number of bespoke catwalk images created specifically to embrace the spirit of the Spring/Summer 2012 collections that will be showing at LFW this month.

‘They’re a bit more colourful, fun and quirky’, explains Halaris. ‘The ones in the entrance are more high-fashion and abstract, more black and white with striking poses to make a big impact.’

The works will be displayed from  September 15 -21 at the May Fair Hotel, 2A White Horse Street, London W1J
