Jason Bruges works on W Hotels flagship in Leicester Square

Jason Bruges Studio has revealed details of its involvement in the new 192-room W London hotel in Leicester Square, which is set to open in February.

The new flagship for W Hotels has been designed by architect Jestico & Whiles with a permanent light installation by Jason Bruges which wraps around floor-to-ceiling glazing of the building, covering each floor.

Bruges’ installation has already been seen in its testing phase. Senior designer and architect Gabby Shawcross describes it as ‘an art work that captures 360-degree panoramic films from Leicester Square and plays them back as a digital performance’.

Cameras on the roof of the building take photographs every minute and build up a 24-hour time-lapse film. Detecting changes in daylight and natural light, the ‘changing architectural context’ is represented through 600 lights in a ‘glass veil’ which surrounds the building, Shawcross says.

The interior of the hotel, designed by Amsterdam-based consultancy Concrete, is influenced by British cultural ‘passion points within film, fashion music, and design’, according to W Hotels.

One of the hotel’s room categories – The Wonderful Room – features bathrooms integrated into the living space so that they ‘flow’ into each other but still offer privacy, the hotel says.

The hotel also features a gym called Sweat and a nightclub called Wyld. The latter has been designed as a double-height, curved space, featuring an oversized mirror ball.
